What are the most patriotic states in the United States? At least? Personal finance company WalletHub released a survey in mid-June that ranked all 50 states using a methodology that included more than a dozen indicators.
Virginia was the most patriotic state overall; It ranked third in terms of military participation and seventh in terms of civilian participation.
“Virginia has approximately 1,761 active-duty military personnel for every 100,000 civilians, the third largest number in the nation. And there are approximately 103 veterans for every 1,000 civilians, the second largest number in the nation,” WalletHub reported.

WalletHub finance writer Adam McCann explained the findings in a June 15 report: “Most Patriot States in America.”
“To determine where Americans have the most red, white and blue pride on Independence Day and throughout the rest of the year, WalletHub compared states across 13 key indicators of patriotism,” McCann wrote.

“Our dataset ranges from military and veterans in the state to the share of adults voting in the 2024 presidential election to AmeriCorps volunteers per capita.”
On the civic side of the equation, Virginia “has a high voter turnout rate, with 72.9% of residents voting in the 2024 presidential election, compared to the national average of 66%,” the report said. “On top of that, Virginia has the fifth-highest number of peacekeepers per capita and is one of many states that requires a stand-alone civics course for high school graduation.”
WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo told readers: “The most patriotic states have large numbers of residents who serve or have served in the armed forces, have high voter turnout during elections, and large portions of the population volunteer with national or local organizations. Patriotism is not concentrated in one particular area, either; the best states are located in very different geographic areas.”

Montana “was ranked as the second most patriotic state, in part because it had a relatively high voter turnout. 69.2% of the state’s voting population participated in the 2024 presidential election, and nearly 46% voted in the 2020 primary (the highest in the nation).”
It also ranked second in jury service, the second-highest number of AmeriCorps volunteers, and the relatively high 37% of residents volunteering for an organization overall.
The top five in the overall rankings were Vermont, Colorado and Oregon.

According to the research, the least patriotic states were Arkansas, which ranked 50th overall, followed by New York, Louisiana and Alabama.
The survey claimed that, based on its methodology, the 19 “blue” states that voted for Kamala Harris in 2024 were more patriotic on average than the 31 states that voted for election winner Donald Trump.
The nation’s three largest blue states in 2024, Illinois (37th), California (40th) and New York (49th), were relatively low in the poll.
