Walz Says National Guard Ready After ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said Wednesday that the state’s National Guard is ready to deploy if necessary and added that “we have never been at war with our federal government” after a woman was fatally shot during a federal immigration enforcement operation.

At a news conference, Walz said he had issued a warning order to the Guard, meant as a first step to step up preparations in case troops are needed amid rising tensions following Wednesday’s shooting.

“We are preparing the National Guard,” he said. “They are ready to be deployed if necessary.”

The atmosphere became tense after an unidentified 37-year-old woman was shot in her car in Minneapolis.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were conducting an enforcement action when their vehicle got stuck in the snow.

A federal law enforcement officer shot and hit the woman after she crashed into a nearby parked vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. DHS told Fox News that the ICE agent who opened fire in Minneapolis on Wednesday was injured in an earlier altercation.

In a separate incident last June while working in the city, the agent was dragged by a car, DHS officials said.

Walz noted that the National Guard members were residents of the state and were not bused in from elsewhere.

“Minnesota will not allow our community to be used as support in a national political fight,” he said. “We won’t take the bait.”
