Wang Yi calls for India, China to accelerate resumption of stalled dialogue mechanisms

In a statement made early on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Chinese Foreign Minister and Politburo member Wang Yi, in his meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi on Monday, June 22, 2026, called on both sides to “accelerate the resumption of dialogue mechanisms and promote exchanges” in trade, finance and other fields.

He also called on both sides to “respect each other’s core interests, handle sensitive issues appropriately, place the China-India border issue in the appropriate position, and prevent it from affecting the overall situation of bilateral relations.”

Mr Wang’s references to the resumption of dialogue mechanisms being “imperative” came after the Chinese Ambassador to India said earlier this month that most dialogue frameworks between India and China were still blocked. “There are about 50 intergovernmental dialogue mechanisms in China and India; unfortunately, most of them have stalled,” said Xu Feihong, speaking at The Hindu Huddle in Bengaluru.

Mr. Doval had underlined in the meeting held during the BRICS NSA meeting in New Delhi on Monday that stable, predictable and constructive bilateral relations contribute to trust building and better understanding between the two parties. A brief statement from New Delhi on Monday said both sides reviewed the latest developments in bilateral relations and progress was being made towards gradual normalization of relations.

However, the normalization process is faltering and begins with simpler measures such as the resumption of direct flights, with months of long negotiations. Even as both sides are finalizing arrangements for Mr. Doval to visit Beijing for the next round of talks with Mr. Wang under the Special Representatives mechanism, other dialogue mechanisms are yet to resume. This visit will also shed light on whether Mr. Xi will visit India for the BRICS leaders’ summit in September as expected.

‘Not a rival’

A longer Chinese report on the talks released earlier on Tuesday said Mr Wang, who is also Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission, had stated during Monday’s talks that “India is an important neighbor of China”.

“Under the joint guidance of President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sino-Indian relations have gradually emerged from their nadir and returned to a path of recovery and recovery. Leaders of both countries agree that China and India are partners, not rivals, which constitutes the most important strategic consensus between the two sides and provides important impetus and strategic assurance for the healthy and stable development of Sino-Indian relations. As the two most populous economies, China and India should not only view bilateral relations with a long-term perspective, but also move forward,” the statement said. “cooperation in terms of cooperation” was stated.

Mr. Wang said that thanks to the efforts of both sides, “exchanges in various fields between China and India have gradually resumed, communication and cooperation have progressed in an orderly manner, and the border areas remain generally peaceful and calm.”

“These achievements did not come easily and deserve even more recognition,” he said. “Both sides need to take practical steps to implement the important consensus of the leaders of the two countries, help each other’s development and revival through cooperation, and accelerate the modernization process of the Global South. Both sides should respect each other’s core interests, properly handle sensitive issues, place the China-India border issue in the appropriate position, and prevent it from affecting the overall situation of bilateral relations.”

He added that “it is necessary to accelerate the resumption of dialogue mechanisms and promote the exchange of ideas in various fields such as trade, finance, law enforcement and media.”

“In order to improve the relations between the two countries, efforts must be made to create correct perceptions of all segments of society and to actively direct public opinion and social support on solid foundations,” he said.

China’s Foreign Minister said that “with the collective rise of the Global South, including China and India”, the BRICS group, as the “front-line of the Global South”, should “actively defend and advance the process of multipolarization, protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, and promote the development of the international order towards a fair and reasonable direction”.

The Chinese statement quoted Mr. Doval as saying that Mr. Modi and Mr. Xi, through their meetings in Kazan in October 2024 and Tianjin in August 2025, “pointed the way forward for developing bilateral relations through their meetings in Kazan and Tianjin.”

Mr. Doval was quoted as saying that “India and China agree that they are partners, not competitors, and believe that a stable India-China relationship serves the common interests of both parties.” “The Indian side is willing to continue looking at its relations with China from a strategic perspective, work with China to well implement the consensus of the two leaders, view and accelerate the development process of bilateral relations with a forward-looking attitude, properly handle differences and strive for a win-win situation.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry statement also quoted Mr. Doval as telling Mr. Wang that “India was one of the first countries to recognize the New China” and that “India’s position on the Taiwan issue has not changed in any way.”
