Biden completes radiation treatment for prostate cancer, rings bell

Former President Joe Biden completed a series of radiation treatments on Monday for an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
Biden had been receiving treatment at Penn Medicine Radiation Oncology in Philadelphia for several weeks. The former president’s daughter, Ashley Biden, hailed the milestone in a post on social media.
“Ring the bell! Thank you to the incredible doctors, nurses, and staff at Penn Medicine. We are so grateful!” he wrote on Instagram.
“He rang the bell today,” Biden spokeswoman Kelly Scully said, according to CBS News.

“Dad was so brave throughout his treatment. We are grateful,” Ashley wrote in a follow-up post.

It is common practice in cancer treatment centers to ring a bell when patients complete a round of radiation therapy. It serves as both a sign of progress for the patient and a form of encouragement for other patients receiving treatment at the facility.
It’s unclear whether Biden will need more radiation therapy.

Biden announced his diagnosis of prostate cancer in May and said that the disease had already metastasized and spread to his bones. The announcement doubled down on concerns that the White House has not been forthcoming about Biden’s health during his time in office.

Biden also had surgery to remove cancerous skin cells on September 4, a procedure known as Mohs surgery.
Biden had a cancerous skin lesion during his presidency was removed from his chest, The White House has said before. Former White House physician Kevin O’Connor noted in February 2023 that a skin tissue biopsy taken during a health evaluation revealed cancerous cells, and all of them were successfully removed.
