Washington stepfather shot dead by neighbor after allegedly firing on stepdaughters

A Washington state man was shot and killed by his neighbor after he allegedly opened fire on two women during a domestic argument that spilled into a nearby driveway, police said.

Officers with the Puyallup Police Department (PPD) responded around 9:10 a.m. April 2 after investigators allege 47-year-old Arnino Guanlao shot two adult female relatives following a family argument outside the home.

A neighbor who was inside at the time came outside and intervened, fatally shooting Guanlao, according to police.

One of the victims, 23-year-old Christiannel Lyle Macapagal Maningat, died at the scene. Authorities said the second woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The case remains under investigation, including reviewing the neighbor’s use of force, authorities said.

Washington law allows a person to use force to protect himself or others if he reasonably believes it is necessary; but lethal force is justified only when faced with an immediate threat of serious injury or death.

“This is under investigation as to exactly how the circumstances occurred,” PPD Capt. Kevin Gill said at a news conference.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene when gunshots were heard in the neighborhood.

“There was a girl here face down, she was still breathing a little bit and trying to move a little bit but she wasn’t doing much. Then pretty quickly a cop came on the scene and he and I pulled her out, turned her over and found the gunshot wound in her abdomen,” neighbor Michelle Weingarden-Bandes said. FOX 13 Seattle.

“We are all in shock, not only at what we saw and what happened here this morning, but also at what happened in our neighborhood.”

According to FOX 13 Seattle, investigators said the neighbor who shot the suspect was cooperative as detectives worked to determine the circumstances of the use of force.

Detectives are also working to determine what led to the dispute and are reviewing multiple sites linked to the incident, according to the report.

Neighborhood residents reported that they heard many gunshots during the incident.

Detectives continue to interview witnesses, many of whom remain distraught by the violence, law enforcement officials said.

Additional reporting: Law and Crime He identified Guanlao as the stepfather of the victims and said he was shooting at his adult stepdaughters when his neighbor intervened.

Authorities did not say what triggered the initial dispute.

PPD said detectives in the Criminal Investigations Division, along with the Metro Cities Crime Response Unit, continue to investigate the incident.

The violence stunned the victims’ families.

A GoFundMe created for the family says the victims’ mother is now caring for her surviving daughters, grieving the loss of a child and remaining at the bedside of another child who is still hospitalized.

The fundraiser, which raised nearly $19,000, says the family’s life “changed in a matter of minutes” and describes the emotional toll the other two girls experienced as they tried to cope with the consequences of the violence.

Organizers said the fund will help cover funeral costs, medical expenses and basic living needs as the family continues to survive the shooting.
