‘Waste to Energy plants in Hyderabad fail to meet WHO standards’

Civil society, political, environmental organizations and local communities, Jawaharnagar and Dundygal’daki (WTE) came together to raise their voices against plants and said that they have greatly violated the standards envisaged by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The organizations referring to a report made by the central pollution control committee submitted to the National Green Court, said that 858.65 milligrams per kilogram, which was released by the Jawaharnagar plant, said that 858.65 milligrams per kilogram were 1,073 times higher than the WHO permitted limit.

The chrome levels in 230.31 mg/kg are also very above the safe threshold, rather than being used for brick making or by being sent to a safe storage area as approved to operate, the fly ash is clearly thrown into the Jawarnagar casting site and creates a serious danger for surrounding communities.

Similarly, in the Dundygal WTE, cadmium levels are 956.69 mg/kg, which is 1,195 times higher than the permissible limits, and this ash is poured into Jawaharnagar casting.

“These revelations come in the middle of a country -wide campaign that opposes the re -classification of WTE burning furnaces from the red category to blue industries.

In particular, WTEs have 97.6 pollution indexes, which are the highest among all the so -called blue categories, and this re -categorization makes it a direct threat to environmental safety and public health.

The organizations demanded that TGPCB should immediately suspend WTE operations in Haydarabad until the secure disposal norms were met and that the operators should be obtained a significant environmental compensation and a demonstration notification for violations.

An open roadmap to get away from the volatile ash and the effects on the surrounding communities and to move away from WTE to systemic transformations in waste management were other demands. .
