Waymo autonomous vehicle drives into lit fireworks in San Francisco

During Independence Day celebrations over the weekend, passengers in a Waymo vehicle were horrified when the car crashed into lit fireworks in the middle of a San Francisco street.
Video footage of the incident shows a group of shocked passengers as the driverless vehicle approaches burning fireworks in the middle of the street as the explosives are about to detonate.
As the car approaches, someone on the street waves his hand and warns the car to stop.

Behind the scenes, one of the passengers can be heard saying, “No, no, no, don’t go, don’t go, don’t go.”
The autonomous vehicle then flies over colorful flames and sparks.
“Our Waymo just drove into a fireworks show,” a passenger says in the clip.

“Are we on fire, man?” a fellow passenger asks.
A spokesperson for Waymo told Fox News Digital that the company is “committed to keeping our riders safe and earning the trust of the communities in which we operate.”
The statement continued: “We take situations like this seriously and are committed to evaluating and learning from these incidents.”

No injuries were reported to either the passengers or the vehicle, and the company reached out to the drivers after the trip. It is illegal to possess fireworks in San Francisco, even “Safe and Sane” explosives, the city’s fire department said.
A separate fireworks explosion on Saturday killed a woman and injured two adults and a child, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Elsewhere in San Francisco, some Waymo vehicles were towed after their batteries died after being stuck in traffic for hours.

“Our priority is to keep San Francisco moving safely, especially during major city celebrations,” a Waymo spokesperson said. “On July 4th, extreme traffic congestion in North San Francisco disrupted the normal operation of several Waymo vehicles.”
The statement continued: “Our roadside assistance team worked quickly to remove our vehicles from the area, in coordination with local authorities and emergency services.”
