As the old saying goes, there are only two certainties in life; death and taxes.

But despite extraordinary scientific advances, death remains one of life’s greatest mysteries. No one truly knows what awaits them until they face it themselves.

There are countless popular theories about seeing a white light or watching your life unfold like a film reel – but how reliable are they?

Our only insight into this puzzle comes from individuals who were clinically dead and subsequently resuscitated.

Some of these people took to Reddit in an attempt to answer the unanswerable question: “What is it like to die?” Daily Star reported.

The answers are quite varied.

Monitormonkey underwent major surgery, during which he lost so much blood that he was declared dead for several minutes.

“I woke up in what looked like space, but there were no stars or lights. It wasn’t like I was floating in the air, I was just there.

“I wasn’t hot or cold, hungry or tired; just a peaceful, neutral thing. I knew there was light and love somewhere nearby, but I didn’t want or need to go there right away.”

“I remember thinking about my life, but it wasn’t like a montage. More like I was idly flipping through the pages of a book and bits and pieces stood out here and there.

“Whatever it is, it has changed the way I think about some things. I’m still afraid of dying, but I’m not worried about what happens next.”

2. Visit of a loved one

Schneidah7 was thrown from his motorcycle while traveling at 50 miles per hour and was clinically dead when he reached the hospital.

As he waited for the ambulance on the road surface, he remembered a recognizable figure encouraging him forward.

“I just remember being on the sidewalk and everything slowly getting darker and quieter.

“The only reason I couldn’t sleep was because someone yelled, ‘Ranger, get up, you sugar jerk! Come on, man, get up. Get up. Get up!’ It was a strange moment when I heard him shout.

“Then someone slapped my helmet (which actually hit my head very hard).

“When I opened my eyes, I saw my brother crouched on the sidewalk next to me. It was weird because my brother had died of an overdose a few years before.

“The only thing I remember is him looking at his watch and saying something like ‘They’ll be here soon’ and then walking away.”

“I wish I could give more details but I honestly don’t remember much of the incident and my memory is still impaired due to the accident.”

While many users describe ‘death’ as an event that resembles emptiness, IDiedForABit experienced something completely different after their heart-stopping allergic reaction.

“I remember being pulled backwards, extremely slowly, like I was being pulled through water, and this darkness was coming in and out.

“At one point he disappeared again and I was looking at a garden.

“It wasn’t full of flowers, just dust and patchy grass. There was a playground with a carousel in the middle, and two children were running around it. A boy and a girl.

“It’s hard to describe but I had the feeling that I could choose whether I wanted to stay or go but every time I tried to go back I was held in place.

“I thought about all the reasons why I wanted to come back, and when I told my being that I didn’t want to leave my mother, it finally released whatever was holding me back.

“I came back to my body. My heart had stopped for six minutes.”

As a teenager, TheDeadManWalks endured months of chemotherapy when his nose began bleeding uncontrollably.

His condition worsened after he developed sepsis and a Clostridium difficile infection, and he drifted in and out of consciousness, as he vividly described.

“The worst part about the whole thing, looking back, is how peaceful it can seem.

“It’s like hitting the snooze button on your alarm at 7 a.m.

“Maybe you press it once or twice, but then you remember you have work or school and sleep can wait because you still have things to do.”

altburger69’s brush with death didn’t stop them from making jokes.

“Last year I had a heart attack and my heart stopped three times in the emergency room.

“Apparently, every time they shocked me, I ‘woke up’ (what it felt like) and told the staff a different knock-knock joke each time.

“There was no light, I felt like I was sleeping.”

Following a motorcycle accident, Rullknuf’s pulse and breathing stopped and he experienced “cramps and convulsions”. His friend successfully resuscitated him, with no signs of life for two minutes.

“For me it was just a blackout. No dreams, no visions, just nothing.

“Apparently I’ve asked what happened more than ten times, and it looks like I’ll be happy to be alive today.”
