Weather today, July 21: IMD issues heavy rain alert for Maharashtra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Assam as active monsoon returns

According to the latest weather forecast today, Delhi, Mumbai, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam and many other states are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the week. In contrast, rainfall is expected to remain relatively low over much of west-central India and southern peninsular India.
IMD weather warning: Heavy rain expected in many states this week
IMD said active monsoon conditions are expected to continue over north, east and northeast India for the next six to seven days.
Meteorology’s predictions are as follows:
- Heavy rains were witnessed in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh on different days this week.
- Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to receive heavy rain while isolated places are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall.
- Heavy showers in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha.
- Strong monsoon activity in Assam, Meghalaya and other northeastern states.
- Moderate to heavy rains in some parts of Konkan, Goa and Maharashtra.
Those living in sensitive areas are advised to follow local weather warnings as heavy rains can lead to waterlogging, flash floods and landslides.
Weather in Delhi today: Yellow alert issued as monsoon revives
IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi and predicts light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thundershowers and lightning in isolated places. The national capital, which has been witnessing a prolonged dry spell despite the arrival of the southwest monsoon, is expected to see cooler temperatures in the next two days as rainfall activity increases.
IMD also stated that with the monsoon getting stronger, heavy rains are possible in Delhi and surrounding areas this weekend.
Weather in Mumbai today: Rain will intensify in the coming days
Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is expected to witness a more active phase of the monsoon.
According to IMD:
- Mumbai is expected to receive moderate rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Heavy rain is expected in deserted places on Thursday.
- Thane may experience heavy showers on Wednesday and Thursday.
- Palghar is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, with thunderstorms initially followed by heavy rain towards the weekend.
- Raigad may experience the heaviest rainfall with heavy rains at a few places.
Travelers are advised to expect traffic flow slowdowns and possible pooling of water in low-lying areas during periods of heavy rainfall.
Weather in West Bengal: Heavy rain warning for north Bengal, thunderstorm warning for south Bengal
IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in northern parts of West Bengal over the next two days.
Officials warned that persistent rainfall could trigger:
- Landslides in mountainous regions.
- Flash floods in sensitive areas at sea level.
- Localized flooding in urban pockets.
Heavy rainfall is expected between July 21 and July 23 in South Bengal:
- North 24 Parganas
- South 24 Parganas
- Nadia
- howrah
- Purba Medinipur
- Pashim Medinipur
- jhargram
Thunderstorms, accompanied by winds of 30-40 kilometers per hour, are expected in many districts.
Weather in Kolkata today: Intermittent rain expected throughout the week
Kolkata is expected to receive intermittent showers from Tuesday and rainfall activity is expected to gradually intensify throughout the week.
Authorities advised residents and fishermen to follow the latest weather bulletins as changing wind patterns could lead to sudden heavy rains.
Weather in Himachal Pradesh: Red alert for heavy rains
IMD issued a red alert for some parts of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday.
Some districts are expected to experience very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of:
- landslides
- flash floods
- closed roads
- Disruption of transportation services
Tourists traveling to mountainous areas are advised to follow local government advice.
Weather in Uttarakhand: Heavy to very heavy rain expected
The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to extremely heavy rains in various parts of Uttarakhand in the next few days.
Mountainous regions remain vulnerable to landslides, while rivers and seasonal streams may experience a rapid increase in water levels following sustained rainfall.
Weather in Rajasthan: Monsoon will be active again
Monsoon activities are expected to revive in Rajasthan from July 21.
IMD’s predictions are as follows:
- Light to moderate rain in eastern and northern Rajasthan from Tuesday.
- There was an increase in rainfall activity in Western Rajasthan from July 25 onwards.
- Thunderstorms in many districts.
- Strong winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km per hour, stronger winds in isolated places.
Heavy rainfall is also expected on many days in eastern Rajasthan this week.
Weather in Uttar Pradesh: Heavy rain expected in eastern and western regions
Rainfall activity is expected to increase in Uttar Pradesh in the coming days.
IMD’s predictions are as follows:
- Heavy rains in eastern Uttar Pradesh between 22 July and 24 July.
- Heavy showers in Western Uttar Pradesh between 23 July and 25 July.
- Thunderstorms and lightning were effective in many districts.
- Extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas, especially during active monsoon phases.
Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha weather update
Eastern India is expected to remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions.
IMD’s prediction was this:
- Heavy rainfall in Bihar from 20 July to 23 July.
- Heavy showers in Jharkhand and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.
- Rainfall across Odisha during the week.
- Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
Individual periods of very heavy rainfall may also occur in some districts.
Northeast India weather: Assam, Meghalaya and other states on alert
IMD predicts widespread rainfall in northeast India.
Heavy rain is expected:
- assam
- meghalaya
- Arunachal Pradesh
- Nagaland
- Manipur
- Mizoram
- tripura
Extremely heavy rainfall is also possible in isolated places of Assam and Meghalaya during the active monsoon season.
Weather in Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa
The Konkan coast and Goa are expected to continue receiving widespread rainfall next week.

Meanwhile, Gujarat is expected to witness increased rainfall activities later this week.
Weather in Tamil Nadu: Light to moderate rain in most parts
Unlike Northern India, Southern Peninsular India is expected to witness relatively weak monsoon conditions.
IMD has predicted moderate rainfall in the Western Ghats regions of Tamil Nadu until July 24.
Puducherry and Karaikal, along with many other districts, are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are also expected in some areas.
Monsoon update: Southwest monsoon poised for strong revival
According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon is poised for a significant revival after remaining relatively weak in many regions in recent weeks.
The renewed activity is expected to begin in northeastern India and then gradually spread to the eastern, central and northern parts of the country.
This new period will likely result in increased precipitation, lower daytime temperatures, and reduced rainfall deficiencies in many states.

The weather department expects active monsoon conditions to continue over the north, east and northeast of India throughout the next week.
Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning are expected to affect many states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam and Maharashtra.
At the same time, rainfall is expected to remain relatively light over much of west-central India and southern peninsular India, with only isolated showers expected in a few areas.
