Extreme weather conditions in various parts of the world this week have resulted in record-breaking temperatures in Honduras, North America and Indonesia.
Honduras broke its all-time May maximum temperature record earlier this month; but it broke again on May 13 in Choluteca, known as the oven of Central America. Temperatures climbed to 42.2C (107.9F), surpassing the previous record of 42.1C. More records are expected to fall as the intense heat is predicted to continue in the coming weeks.
It rose to 46.7C in the aptly named Furnace Creek in the US west. It marks the highest temperature recorded in the country so far this year and is exceptionally high for mid-May. Nearby weather stations recorded a temperature of 46°C, underlining the extent of the heat.
Although Indonesia is in a cool season, temperatures in the archipelago have shattered records recently. The day temperature in Manokwari on Wednesday was recorded at 35.8C, but it turned out to be the night temperature that was most worrying. Bali airport broke a new record for the region by dropping temperatures below 27.9 degrees for three nights in a row. The sweltering overnight temperatures extended further east in the archipelago to West Timor, where the temperature dropped below 26.4C, breaking the previous May record.
The heatwave also affected northern China and Mongolia, where 10 weather stations matched or exceeded May records. Temperatures are expected to continue in the mid to high 30s through the weekend.
