Wesfarmers: Bunnings and Officeworks owner calls for review of ‘outdated’ Perth trading hours

Wesfarmers boss Rob Scott said Perth’s outdated shopping hours were reviewed and that shoppers were worse under the rules that restrict when Bunnings could sell and open.

Wesfarmers’s hardware giant recently cut the process of processing hours of Bayswater and Cannington warehouses to allow products with whites, devices, domestic products and car maintenance to sell the Bunnings product range.

Retail shops in Perth must comply with the transaction times required by the state between 08: 00-17: 00 on Saturdays and 11: 00-17: 00 on Saturdays. Bunnings and many other special stores trade within the scope of “Special Retail” arrangements that allow them to open between 18.30 and 23:00 – but restrict what they can sell.

As a result, shoppers in Bayswater and Cannington are now directed to nearby stores outside the discounted watches.

Scott told Perthnow, “Another examination of this is worth doing because the retail view has changed more than the days when these laws have changed,” he said.

“It seems that you can be at home on Sunday morning and you can get a packaged e-commerce package in a distribution center on the East Coast when you are not allowed to go to local Bunings to buy.

“Take pet products; Bunnings is not allowed to offer early in the morning, whereas you can go to an independent store and shop there.”

Mr. Scott, e-commerce and Amazon “really did not” and stressed that the laws were established by adding the following: “Considering the restrictions around the trading hours, customers are worse.”

The state government would not agree on this issue when the need for trading hours to protect small businesses from large businesses such as Bunnings, Coles and Woolworths.

Meanwhile, the owners of an independent hardware store in Mount Lawy this week announced that they would close 45 years and show the online competition as the main factor.

Bunnings General Manager Mike Schneider said Perth laws did not keep up with national and international facts.

“The government continues to support the old legislation that restricts what local businesses can offer to its customers, P said Perthnow. “Conclusion, many of our Western Australian customers continue to miss access to important products and services for their homes or businesses due to the 40 -year -old legislation in some cases.

“A clear example of how decades of laws do not keep up with the Times is the rapid acceleration of online shopping. We have international online retailers who are no longer confronted with any of these restrictions, 7/24 to WA customers, and local retailers are free to limit the selection for Western Australians.”

Bunnings has called for two Perth stores to offer more options to customers. Armadale has already been operating at discounted hours. The other 24 metropolitan store operates at the current hours.

Coles and Woolworths are also angry. In 2023, Woolworths opened a supermarket opened at Perth Airport on weekdays 5: 00-22: 00 and weekends from 7 am to 9 pm. Since the airport land belongs to Commonwealth, it can skip the rules of the state.

Coles CEO Leah Weckert told Perthnow to Perthnow last week: “Most of our customers said that they would love to have more opening hours on a Sunday and that our teams will definitely make it easier for our teams to run stores.”

Schneider hoped that changes would provide more convenience for PeTH customers to reach the expanded range of Bunnings, “He also emphasized the inequalities of the current legislative landscape”.

Western Australian Mr. Scott said early signs wanted customers with the expanded range of Bunnings.

“We have seen stronger sales because we can offer a wider range in the reduced range,” he said. “This tells us that customers like change and spend more money on Bunnings.

“I can’t imagine that we want to change all our stores, but we see that there is a very strong customer demand.”
