Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, a Republican, was hospitalized Tuesday after undergoing a minor procedure to remove fluid pressing on her lung, according to her office.
Ivey, 81, will be monitored very carefully in the coming days at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery, the governor’s spokesman said in a statement.
The fluid was discovered on Tuesday when the governor went to his doctor after experiencing discomfort on his left side and recent shortness of breath.
“Governor Kay Ivey has been experiencing some discomfort on her left side for the past three weeks,” the statement said. “After observing the pain and recently feeling mild shortness of breath, she decided to see her primary care physician again earlier today.”

Even though Ivey’s medical problem was not an emergency, he wanted it taken care of as soon as possible so that he could recover before the end of the legislative session.
“While not an emergency, Governor Ivey requested that the procedure be performed as quickly as possible so that we can quickly return to 100% to complete the 2026 Regular Session,” the statement said.
Ivey’s office did not say how long she would remain in the hospital.
“We have been in contact with Governor Ivey, and she says she is committed to a very rapid and complete recovery,” her spokesperson said.

Officials in Alabama and other states offered support for Ivey to recover from the procedure.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, a Republican, said he was grateful that Ivey “received excellent care from some of the best medical professionals. She is in good hands, and I join the many Alabamians praying for her speedy and full recovery.”
Georgia GOP Gov. Brian Kemp said he and his family were praying for Ivey and wishing her a speedy recovery.
“He was always a warrior and we know he will get through this,” Kemp wrote.

The governor of Alabama announced in 2019 that he was exposed to radiation due to lung cancer, describing it as a small localized spot. His office said scans the following year showed the treatment was successful and he was free of the disease.
Ivey is term-limited and will not be eligible for re-election this year.
