West Essex Golf Club fire: Historic clubhouse destroyed as blaze engulfs building | UK | News

A golf club in Essex has been destroyed after a massive fire as emergency services arrived at the scene. West Essex Golf Club in Waltham Abbey was engulfed in flames when emergency services arrived at the scene just before 3pm on Monday. It was reported that six fire crews and approximately 60 firefighters participated in the 125-year-old course.

They confirmed that no one was injured and all staff were accounted for and taken to safety outside the building. A spokesperson for the County of Essex Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters were called to a fire at a golf club in Waltham Abbey this afternoon (Monday, January 5).

“When the first firefighters arrived they confirmed everyone was present and no one was injured. They requested additional firefighters for support.

“The building, which measures approximately 25m x 15m, is two-storey. The fire affects the entire building. Nearly 60 firefighters are at the scene, making intense efforts to intervene in the fire.

“Essex firefighters are supported by nearby fire crews from London Fire Brigade and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.”

The golf club was founded in 1900 by Scottish golfer James Braid.

It is approximately 25 miles northeast of central London and covers parts of Epping Forest.

It features an 18-hole championship course, practice facilities, a pro shop and clubhouse.

The clubhouse features function rooms and hosts weddings and special events.
