Reliance Industries seeking to maximise LPG output, divert natural gas to support priority sectors
Reliance Industries aims to maximize liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) production from its refinery and petrochemical complex in Jamnagar and also divert natural gas produced from the KG-D6 basin to support supply to priority sectors, the privately-owned refinery said on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
The statement said, “Our teams are working 24 hours a day to optimize refinery operations and increase LPG production to ensure that the supply to the domestic market remains stable and reliable,” and continued: “At the same time, natural gas produced from the KG-D6 Basin will be directed to priority sectors to support supply, in line with national energy priorities and Government guidelines.”
One point to note is that New Delhi on Tuesday invoked the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, directing natural gas to certain priority sectors in a phased structure as disruptions in shipments increased due to rising tensions in West Asia. Approximately 30% of India’s total natural gas needs passes through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Union Government had implemented the same law for LPG last week. It aimed to maximize cooking gas production by domestic oil refineries and prioritize supply to domestic consumers.
