Bilaspur District Collector (DC) Sanjay Agrawal said that the accident was serious in nature, many people were trapped and many others were seriously injured. “A total of 8 people lost their lives in this accident. 2 people are still trapped here. The condition of 16-17 people is serious. This is a big accident. Everyone is here and we are carrying out rescue operations,” he said.

What led to the Bilaspur train accident?

The accident occurred around 16:00 when a MEMU train coach crashed into a freight train near Bilaspur station. Bilaspur District Collector (DC) Sanjay Agrawal told ANI that the accident occurred when the last bogie of a local train collided with the first bogie of a freight train near Bilaspur. “The last bogie and the first bogie of a local train and a freight train collided near Bilaspur. Four people lost their lives in the accident. The rescue operation is ongoing.” said DC Agrawal.

Inspector General (IG) Sanjeev Shukla said that there are fears of casualties in the accident and rescue efforts are on to evacuate the injured. Adding that rescue teams were trying to save a person trapped inside, IG Shukla told ANI: “MEMU train and freight train collided, some people were injured. Rescue operation is on. We are trying to save a person trapped inside.”

A detailed investigation into the incident will be carried out at the Commissioner for Rail Safety (CRS) level to establish the exact cause and recommend necessary corrective actions.

Railways announced gratuitous compensation

The Railway Administration has announced a compensation of 10 lakh rupees to the relatives of the deceased, 5 lakh rupees to those seriously injured and 1 lakh rupees to those with minor injuries following the death of four persons and injuries to many others when a passenger MEMU train collided with a freight train near Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday. Officials said that the incident occurred around 16:00 when the MEMU train wagon crashed into a stationary freight train.

The Railway Administration is providing all possible assistance to the affected passengers and their families. Continuous coordination is maintained with regional authorities and medical teams to ensure that emergency aid measures are taken.
