As Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Bay of Bengal, disaster management authorities in Odisha have been put on high alert. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that a severe cyclonic storm may form by October 26 and will gradually strengthen as it moves towards the northwest. The cyclone is expected to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada, between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, on the evening or night of October 28.
In anticipation of the storm, Odisha has issued a heavy rainfall warning from October 27. Many districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall between 28-29 October. Wind speeds are expected to rise to 60-70 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h in some areas.
Rainfall Forecasts for Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu
IMD has also predicted heavy to extremely heavy rains in parts of Andhra Pradesh, especially Yanam and Rayalaseema, from October 27 to 28. As a precaution, a yellow alert was issued for the entire state on October 26. Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, light to moderate rainfall is expected in most parts, with occasional heavy showers expected on 25-26 and 28 October.
Hurricane Location and Movement
As of 23:30 on October 25, IMD reported that the depression in the southeast Bay of Bengal had shifted slightly to the west-northwest. The system was located approximately 850 km east-southeast of Chennai, 890 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam and 890 km southeast of Kakinada. The system is expected to turn into a severe cyclonic storm as it approaches the coast.
Preparedness Measures in Odisha
Fire and rescue departments in Odisha have stepped up preparations to manage the approaching storm. Fire Officer Prabhat Kumar confirmed that SRC boats and draft teams are on standby for emergency operations. Health facilities were also alerted with special arrangements to shift pregnant women who were about to give birth to safer places. Authorities are coordinating between disaster management, health and local government to ensure timely action and minimize risks from heavy rains and strong winds.
Residents of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and coastal Tamil Nadu are advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel and follow updates from IMD and local authorities as Cyclone Montha approaches.
