BJP Alleges Congress-Maoists Nexus, Accuses Rahul Gandhi of Fuelling Naxalite Sympathies

New Delhi: The BJP on Saturday alleged links between the Congress and Maoists and accused its leader Rahul Gandhi of fueling “Naxalite sympathies” and termed it a threat to national sovereignty.

Lashing out a scathing attack on the Congress in a series of posts on its official account on

It has been alleged that a major factor behind such a situation was the influence of “urban Naxals” who were considered members of the erstwhile National Advisory Council (NAC) led by Sonia Gandhi.

Claiming that there has been a “significant decline” in Naxal influence under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, the BJP claimed that “Naxalite apologists” remain “ecstatic” under the Congress leadership.

“Leader of Opposition (in Lok Sabha) Rahul Gandhi continues to nurture Naxalite sympathies… Congress-Naxal nexus is a threat to national sovereignty. It is time to hold Congress accountable and expose this dangerous alliance,” he added.

There was no reaction from the Congress to the BJP’s accusation.

The Naxal insurgency in India has reached alarming proportions and has continued for a long time “largely due to policy paralysis during the UPA-II government”, the BJP claimed.

A “major factor” was the influence of the NAC, which was headed by Sonia Gandhi and reportedly included members sympathetic to Naxal ideology, often referred to as “urban Naxals”.

The BJP also said there was “documented evidence in the form of newspaper reports” to suggest that “urban Naxal” voices within the NAC had raised strong objections when the government was considering taking decisive action against Naxal violence.

“Since the NAC was headed by Sonia Gandhi, the government often bowed to this pressure and as a result, counter-insurgency operations were suspended or diluted – ?even during periods when Naxal activities were at their peak,” it said.

While urban Naxals defended the restriction, entire regions of India were dismantled brick by brick and wire by wire, villages were claimed to have been completely cut off from civilisation, and Naxalites were said to have “systematically destroyed” the foundations of rural development between 2007 and 2012.

The BJP said the influence of Naxalism has witnessed a “significant decline” with Prime Minister Modi empowering the home ministry to pursue a decisive strategy against the menace.

“For the first time, India has not only intensified operations but also publicly announced a timeline to effectively end the Naxalite menace, ?a goal that now appears achievable,” the party said.

“The impact of Naxalism has witnessed a significant decline since its peak in the late 2000s, when it affected 180 districts across India. By 2024, the number had fallen to only 38 districts, predominantly concentrated in the ‘Red Corridor’ in states such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Maharashtra and Bihar.”

The BJP alleged that Rahul Gandhi is “dangerously flirting with Naxalite terrorism”, saying the opposition leader continues to fan “Naxalite sympathies” in the opposition benches.

The party said security forces recently neutralized Madvi Hidma, one of the country’s most wanted Maoist commanders.

“What happened next shocked the country: people identified as environmentalists staged protests outside Delhi’s India Gate, shouted pro-Naxal slogans in support of the eliminated terrorist and attacked security personnel,” he said.

“What specifically requires scrutiny is Rahul Gandhi’s proliferation of a video showing these urban Naxals through social media platforms,” the BJP said, asking: “By doing so, is Rahul Gandhi providing institutional visibility and perhaps tacit approval to such elements?”
