Police officer died after arrest during paternity leave amid misconduct probe, inquest hears

A police officer who heard that he had heard an investigation hearing an investigation, died after being arrested at home during a paternity’s permission.

PC Alex Hazlett-Beard from Hampshire Constabulary died on February 11, 2025 at Lepe Country Park in the New Forest.

Sam Harel, who represented PC Hazlett-Beard’s widow’s widow’s wife Megan, said: “Meg wants to see Hampshire’s policy around the welfare of the officers, especially for paternity permission for the arrested issues,” he said.

Pruvin Fernando, representing Hampshire Constabulary, replied: “If there is a policy, it must be released.”

Coroner Nicholas Walker, Hampshire Constabulary’e independent Police Behavior Office (IPC) complained and the Great Manchester Police (GMP) said that an investigation was initiated.

Mr. Fernando said it is expected to take Nine months to take a nine months to review IOPC’s report of IOPC.

Mr. Walker said: “Hampshire filed a complaint about the case of this case. The Great Manchester police will not conclude it within a few days.”

PC Hazlett-Beard’s father Nick said: “My opinion allows GMP to do its job because they understand the police system, they understand how to do something, they understand what is good and what is not good.

“And they probably understand whether someone is perverted and whether they find a way around.”

Mr. Walker said that the issues to be looked at by all the investigations included prosperity support for the arrest of PC Hazlett-Beard’s house, and for the application of firearms and firearms.

Mr. Fernando added that the accident in 2023 exposed PC Hazlett-Beard to post-traumatic stress disorder and said: “There are problems about how this accident affects Alex’s mental health on its own.

“Then there is a desire to be a part of the surveillance unit and the necessary training. At the beginning of 2025, they are all stressful for him.”

When the investigation was opened before, PC Hazlett-Beard’s vehicle was found to be dead, but the pathologist Dr Matthew Sommerlad was not given the cause of death because it required the result of toxicology tests.

Last month, Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones announced an independent examination of Force’s professional standards department after the death of PC Hazlett-Beard and another officer PC Claire Browne’s indifferent death.

Mr. Walker postponed the case for a full hearing to start on September 28, 2026.

Jones said: “Recent events clearly raised the questions and concerns between civil servants, staff and wider people about how the force deals with internal investigations.”

In a statement published after the death of PC Hazlett-Beard, Spencer Wragg, President of the Hampshire Police Federation, said: “Alex was a special officer who carefully served force for several years.

“He was a well -loved and respected colleague. I enjoyed working with Alex and I know that the loss is felt by many people of power.
