Trump administration officials claimed shots were fired during a gala dinner event. According to reports, a close aide to President Trump has confirmed that the Republican leader is ‘safe’. Media outlets, citing the Secret Service, reported that the suspect was detained after the shooting.
Other Trump administration officials who attended the dinner were also evacuated after loud commotion and noise occurred near the ballroom of the hotel where the dinner was held.
Most of the 2,600 attendees hid as waiters fled to the front of the dining hall.
According to CSPAN’s live broadcast, Melania Trump reacted to something in the crowd and had a concerned look on her face shortly before being escorted off stage by security guards.
Loud explosions rang out and guests at the black-tie White House Correspondents’ Dinner scrambled to hide under tables. Tactical teams with their weapons drawn took up positions on the stage where Trump sat before being evacuated.
Police surrounded the Washington Hilton Hotel, where the event took place, and helicopters hovered overhead. The pool report, citing the Secret Service, stated that the alleged attacker was in custody.
