White House reviewing all Smithsonian museum, exhibit content before America 250 celebration in 2026

The Trump administration washes the Smithsonian Institute before the US 250th anniversary celebrations next year and requires certain national museums and connected exhibitions.
In a letter to Smithsonian institution secretary Lonnie Bunch III, Trump administration officials revealed a study process in which President Donald Trump would be compatible with the order of “Restoring the Truth and Mental Health to American History”.
“This initiative aims to comply with the directive of celebrating the American exception, removing divisive or partisan narratives, and complying with the directive of recovery of confidence in our common cultural institutions.”

The following museums are in the first stage of the extensive interpretation: American History National Museums, History of Nature, Afro -American History and Culture and American Indians; National Air and Space Museum; Smithsonian American Museum of Art; National Portrait Gallery and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
The administration said that the investigation was “respect” for the institution’s mission and contributions, and the target is not to intervene in daily operations, but to emphasize “historically accurate, revitalizing and inclusive depictions of American heritage”.
There are five focus points from the analysis of the existing and future content in the exhibitions in the museums to enable all instructions to reflect “Smithsonian’s original mission” for the content of the museum.

All of these items will be reviewed by the personnel in charge of ensuring that the institution is compatible with Trump’s order.

A 120 -day application guide was given, but museums are expected to act in some parts of the process within 30 days after receiving the letter from the management.
Emergency tasks include existing exhibition descriptions, draft plans for upcoming shows, America 250 programming materials and internal instructions used to develop exhibitions. Museums will also choose a personnel contact to serve as the primary contact point in the review process, which will include on -site observational visits.
Within 120 days, museums will be expected to apply to content corrections when necessary and change any “separatist or ideologically driven language with, historically accurate and constructive explanations”.

The Trump administration foresees to complete the study at the beginning of 2026 and described the process as “a collaborative and forward opportunity” focusing on the power, width and achievements of the American story.
“We can work together to renew Smithsonian’s role as the world’s leading museum institution – people who define Americanism – our nation.” The letter was read.
The target was concluded by saying that the Smithsonian institution remained “lively, reliable and inspiring for future generations”.
