The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has formally objected to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau’s (AAIB) summoning of late Captain Sumeet Sabharwal’s nephew, Captain Varun Anand, in connection with the investigation of the AI 171 crash. The pilots’ association sent a legal notice to the investigating agency, claiming that Captain Anand had no technical or operational connection with the aircraft or the incident.

According to the legal notice dated January 11, FIP alleges that Captain Anand, a narrow-body aircraft pilot with Air India, had nothing to do with the planning, dispatching, operation or maintenance of flight AI 171. The AAIB’s request for his presence does not specify the legal basis, purpose or interest of his participation, the notice states.
“The summoning of Captain Varun Anand arises solely due to his familial relationship with the deceased pilot, which makes the action unacceptable in law and arbitrary,” the statement said. Reference was also made to the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) rules and ICAO Annex 13, which restrict investigations to the gathering of technical information and expressly prohibit assigning blame or liability.

Captain Varun Anand is a pilot operating narrow-body aircraft with Air India. He is the nephew of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, Command Pilot of Flight AI 171, which crashed in Ahmedabad. Captain Anand was not directly involved with the wide-body Boeing 787-8 aircraft or the flight operations of AI 171 and was not at the scene of the accident.

The crash remains one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters and the AAIB is still conducting a technical investigation into its causes.
FIP Brings Clarity to Cooperation
While FIP objected to the call, it confirmed that Captain Anand was willing to cooperate and participate via video conferencing. The association requested the AAIB to propose a suitable date and time for the interaction, emphasizing that any participation must be voluntary and not based on family connections, but related to the technical aspects of the research.
Investigation Continues, Report Expected in June
The AAIB continues to examine all technical and operational factors contributing to the accident and the final report is expected to be published in June 2026. FIP’s legal challenge underscores the pilots’ board’s position that family members without direct involvement should not be forced to take part in such investigations, maintaining both legal expediency and procedural fairness.
