In one of the biggest heists of modern times, a jaw-dropping €88 million ($102 million) worth of jewelery was stolen from the ‘Louvre’ museum in Paris in broad daylight on October 19. While the ‘four-minute’ robbery stunned the world with the arrest of two suspects, the internet is obsessed with a ‘mysterious’ man captured in a dapper photo wearing a fedora and three-piece suit. To look. It looked straight out of a French crime movie. Netizens speculated that the man might be a detective investigating the massive Louvre robbery, to which he responded: ‘SO FRENCH!’ He said he gave his name.

Who is the mysterious man?

Immediately after the robbery, an Associated Press photo began circulating widely on social media. In the photo, three police officers were seen near the Louvre courtyard, and right next to them was ‘THE MAN’, dressed as if he had stepped out of a 1940s detective movie. Fedora adorned a gold vest, adding an umbrella as a walking stick to his style. She looked like she stepped off the set of the movie ‘The Paris Jewel Heist’. The internet was amazed by the man’s appearance and manliness and began asking questions: Was he a French detective? A suspect? Who is this man?

One user wrote: ‘The man in the sombrero, who looks like something out of a 1940s crime movie, is a real French police detective investigating the theft. Pure aesthetics.’ Another woman wrote: ‘I’m sure you’ve seen this photo floating around the internet, apparently this is the detective investigating the Louvre jewelery heist, so look at this dapper young man, complete with fedora and umbrella.’

Others on the internet began recreating and romanticizing her style. Their edit went viral on TikTok with the hashtag Louvre Heist. One of his viral TikToks has been viewed more than 5 million times.

It turned out that he was not a detective, but just a passerby. AP photographer Thibault Camus, who took the photo, clarified the issue in an interview. ‘I don’t know him,’ he said. Maybe a tourist? Maybe English? ‘I just saw him walking in an old-fashioned outfit, just like the Museum.’

When asked to identify the man, even the Paris prosecutor’s office complied and said, ‘We would prefer to keep the mystery alive.’
