Who is Maya Tata? Noel Tata’s daughter to drive Westside’s e-commerce push

Maya Tata will reportedly take charge of Trent’s flagship retail brand, Westside, following the retirement of her father Noel Tata, according to media reports.
Trent, a Tata retailer, started with a single store in Bengaluru and has grown into a leading Indian fashion and lifestyle giant, operating fast fashion retail stores such as Westside and Zudio.
Ratan Tata’s 37-year-old nephew will handle Westside’s online business and overseas e-commerce marketing. Economic Times reported. He is a key figure in the group’s next generation leadership.
However, the company is yet to officially confirm reports about Maya Tata’s new role.
This development comes after Noel said Trent’s 74th AGM would be his last as Chairman, marking a historic tenure of nearly three decades.
Speaking to shareholders at Trent’s June AGM, Noel Tata (69) said: “As you know, this will be my last Annual General Meeting as Chairman.”
Noel, who is also the Chairman of Tata Trusts, the largest shareholder of Tata Sons, will turn 70 in November this year. The Companies Act 2013 mandates that no Managing Director or Whole Time Director who is 70 years of age or above can be appointed or continue to work.
Who is Maya Tata?
Unlike her siblings, Maya Tata actively transitioned across different businesses within the conglomerate. He started his finance career at Tata Capital before moving to Tata Digital, where he honed his skills in digital business, customer acquisition and online retail.
During his time at Tata Digital – backed by a major vertical ₹24,000 crore investment from Tata Sons and housing brands like BigBasket, Tata Neu, Croma and Tata 1mg; Technology has achieved intense influence in the retail space. Media reports following the restructuring suggest that it is exploring opportunities in other group entities, including Trent and Tata Consumer Products.
Westside plays a central role in Trent’s growth, contributing approximately 40% of its total revenue. Maya’s unique blend of experience in both finance and digital retail is seen as a key reason why she was tapped to lead the brand’s online and e-commerce 14 strategies.
His reported move comes at a crucial time. Westside is rapidly scaling its omnichannel presence and expanding internationally; is recently opening its first stores in the UAE. Trent plans to open approximately 50 new Westside stores annually, following the addition of 52 stores in FY26. It currently operates 1,286 stores in 321 cities covering Trent, Westside, Zudio and Star Bazaar.
If appointed, Maya will work closely with her brother Neville Tata, who currently heads Trent’s hypermarket chain Star Bazaar. Their sister Leah Tata runs the Taj hotel business.
All three of Noel Tata’s children currently serve on the boards of smaller entities within the Tata Trusts, and Neville holds an additional board seat at the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.
