A sarpanch (village head) of Punjab’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) died after he was shot in the head at a wedding ceremony in Amritsar district. Jarmal Singh was shot by unidentified assailants at the city’s Marigold Resort as he was about to attend a relative’s wedding. He died while receiving treatment in the hospital. The police filed a lawsuit regarding the incident and launched an investigation into the murder.

According to a report by NDTV, Amritsar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagjeet Walia said: “We are inspecting the place and have started investigating from all angles.” He added: “During the initial investigation, we learned that some attackers entered the building and opened fire on him to kill him.” Police are using security camera footage of the venue and questioning eyewitnesses to identify the attackers.

According to media reports, Singh was sitting at a table and eating food when gunmen entered and shot at him. Witnesses said they fired two shots at Singh, apparently intending to kill him. Singh was shot in the head and immediately collapsed, after which he was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries.

‘The attackers came disguised as baraati’

According to The Indian Express, AAP MLA Sarwan Singh Dhun, who was present at the wedding hall at the time of the attack, said: “Sarpanch Jarmal was sitting at the table and eating when the assailants disguised as baraati and shot him in the head. The family said he was receiving threats and extortion demands from the gangsters. Jarmal had even filed a case with the Valtoha police.” Jarmal Singh was a resident of Valtoha village in Tarn Taran district. He had earlier won two elections from Shiromani Akali Dal. He later joined AAP and secured his final term with the support of the ruling party.
