Whole UK village invited on free trip to stunning capital in Europe | World | News

Residents of a small Scottish village with an unfortunate name have been invited to the Austrian capital in a playful gesture by the tourist board. The entire population of Dull in Perthshire, estimated at around 100 people, has been invited to Vienna for free in the new year to assess whether the famous European city has “failed” in the months after Christmas.
The Vienna Tourist Board described the “cultural initiative” as an opportunity to “resolve the pressing question” of whether the Austrian capital will be “boring” in January despite its UNESCO treasures and world-famous cultural and culinary sights.
“Who better to decide whether Vienna is ‘boring’ than the citizens of Dull themselves?” a spokesman asked. Representatives of the board last month distributed wax-sealed invitations and Viennese goody bags to every home in the hamlet, inviting recipients to stay at the iconic Hotel Imperial and enjoy an itinerary tailored to their interests.
While other major cities slow down after Christmas, January marks one of the “liveliest seasons” in Vienna, including the reopening of one of the world’s largest ice rinks, according to the board.
Other activities on the cards for Dull residents include attending the Vienna Science Ball, taking dance lessons, and private tours of the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Vienna State Opera.
It will signal a dramatic change for the locals of Dull, whose home is in a rugged and remote part of central Scotland and has an ancient Christian monastic history.
Norbert Kettner, CEO of the Vienna Tourist Board, said: “We are proud of our museums, concerts, balls and winter magic – but we also enjoy our good sense of humour.
“January is often considered the most boring month on the calendar, which is why we wanted to bring Dull to Vienna.
“It’s the perfect opportunity to show how lively this season can really be. We hope many residents will join us and we look forward to hearing their expert opinions.”
