Whoopi Goldberg tells fans not to blame Trump for Knicks NBA Finals loss

“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg scolded her viewers Tuesday for blaming the Knicks’ loss on President Donald Trump’s game attendance.
The New York Knicks hosted their first NBA Finals game since 1999 on Monday night after winning their first two games on the road against the San Antonio Spurs. Trump, a native New Yorker and longtime Knicks fan, was invited to the game at Madison Square Garden by team owner James Dolan.
The Spurs came away with a 115-111 win, and while some unruly Knicks fans took their frustrations out on the streets, others blamed Trump for the defeat.
“A lot of Knicks fans aren’t happy with you know who right now,” Goldberg said, referring to the president.

He first noted how increased security during Trump’s visit affected the city.
“He came into town, destroyed everything, you couldn’t go, you couldn’t turn left,” Goldberg said. “You couldn’t turn right. You couldn’t cross the street. You couldn’t buy anything.”
“This guy walks in and he’s a fan, okay, but oh my god!” he continued. “And they blame him for ending the Knicks’ winning streak last night.”
Many in the audience applauded this line, but Goldberg warned that they should blame the team, not Trump.
“No, no, no, come on. They weren’t playing great ball. That was our responsibility,” he said. “I need to reiterate the fact that this man doesn’t have that kind of power. We need to remind people. That he doesn’t have that kind of power.”
Co-host Sunny Hostin responded with a grimace, and Goldberg quickly responded: “I see your face and I know how you feel and you can say whatever you want. But to say it was his fault we lost means no responsibility has been taken. These guys weren’t doing their best.”

Although Goldberg dismissed the idea that Trump had anything to do with the Knicks’ loss, Hostin later said: “What’s in play for me is we had perfect weather in New York until the orange guy came and put the bad juju in Madison Square Garden, now we’re going to have to go to Madison Square Garden to throw out all the bad juju.”
He then got angry at Trump for how expensive it was to secure the stadium and for being booed by the crowd, saying “Don’t bring your bad karma vibes to New York!”
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin argued that it was a bad idea for any president to attend the game during such a winning streak and stated that they would be held responsible for any losses. However, he credited him for being a long-time fan even if the team wasn’t doing well.

Goldberg defended both Trump and Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s right to attend the game on Monday.
“I think everyone who is a Knicks fan should be there,” he said. “You’ve earned your right as a Knicks fan. I don’t have to like you.”
“I am sad. Trump and Mayor Mamdani Goldberg added: “We are and are Knicks fans, and they are New Yorkers.” “And… there’s nothing either of them can do to change what’s going on in this city for this team.”
