Why wasp numbers are booming in the UK – and why it’s actually a good thing

For some, gloomy news, England this year after a record hot and dry spring this season sees plenty of donkeys.
However, experts say that the increase in numbers is actually a good thing for the environment.
Adam Professor of Wildlife of Gloucestershire University, Adam Hart, said, “Great pest controllers, dustters and predators of donkey bees. They are very worsening, but an important part of the wider ecosystem.”
Typically, the refrigerant and the wet spring season will edit WASP numbers and destroy the colonies before they are installed. But this season, more sunny weather meant that more queen could survive to build their nests.
Prof Hart said that mild winter and hot spring “probably make a good start to donkeys and insect hunts”.
He said that the cycles of WASP populations were normal, but many people would notice the flow this season because there was a significant decrease in the number of donkeys in 2024.
Experts warned that this was partly caused by climate change and said that he still felt sparse compared to 30 or 40 years ago.
Professor Seirian Sumner is a behavioral ecologist at the University College London, said Guardian: “Hot, dry conditions created the ideal environment for the development of WASPs.
“This means more colony, more donkeys and a longer season.”
