Wildfires burn across UK as fire chiefs warn of extreme pressure

The weekend bushfires also affected Hampshire, Durham, West Sussex, East Sussex, Devon and Somerset.

The major incident declared for the Conwy fire in Wales is now under control, according to North Wales Fire and Rescue Service deputy chief fire officer Justin Evans.

But firefighters are still battling several active fires, including Braichmelyn woodland near Bethesda and the Rhinogydd range near Harlech.

Farmer Gareth Wyn Jones, whose land borders Mount Conwy, said he had “never seen anything on this scale”.

“It was unreal,” he said, adding that he was afraid of his neighbor’s pigs as the flames engulfed the surrounding land while the ponies grazing on the mountain ran away.

Confirming that the animals survived, the official said: “The biggest concern was that they would suffocate from the smoke, but the smoke carried them too.”
