Will Karimnagar get a BJP mayor? All eyes on Mayoral election today

Newly elected BJP corporators Kolagani Srinivas and Y. Sunil Rao have been nominated as candidates by the BJP for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar (MCK), whose indirect election will be held after the swearing-in ceremony on the afternoon of February 16, 2026.

The MCK election result galvanized a council with the BJP winning the highest number of votes in 30 divisions, followed by the Congress (14), BRS (9), AIMIM (3), AIFB (2) and independents in five divisions of the 66-member MCK.

Amid claims and counter-claims by the BJP and the Congress to capture the MCK, all eyes are now on the stand of the BRS and its role in deciding the mayoral election outcome of five independent candidates and two AIFB candidates. Speculations are rife that BRS may not vote in the MCK mayoral elections. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar is expected to cast his vote as an ex-officio member.
