On September 26, 2025, Indian Air Force said a last farewell to the legendary MIG-21 fighter jets at the Chandidgarh Air Force Station. This important situation pointed out the end of a period as Mig-21, known as “flying coffin” or “savior in the heavens”.
A heritage of courage and perfection
In 1963, the MIG-21, which entered the Indian Air Force, played a very important role in shaping the country’s military aviation history. When more than 874 aircraft were acquired, Mig-21 proved its magnitude in many wars, including the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan, Kargil in 1999 and Balakoot in 2019. The impressive war record and versatility gained a repeated place in the hearts of Indian pilots and aviation.
MIG-21 Pension Ceremony
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh and other dignity participated in the farewell ceremony, a proof of the importance of the plane. The air chief Marshal AP Singh flew the MIG-21 for the last time and marked a touching moment in the history of Indian Air Force. The ceremony included a magnificent flypast, water ball salute and a simulated dog conflict.
What will happen to MIG-21 after retirement?
After retirement, the MIG-21 aircraft will be preserved and exhibited in museums, educational institutions and training centers. The parts of the aircraft will be examined and the usable components will be recovered and the rest will be scrapped. Some retired parts exhibited in engineering colleges for training or in army museums and war monuments can be presented. Civil organizations may also request the screen frame of the aircraft subject to certain conditions and regulations.
The future of Indian military aviation
The retirement of the MIG-21 points to a significant change in the fleet composition of the Indian Air Force. The location of the aircraft will be replaced by the Native Light War Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, which will play the role of the façade. Tejas represents a new generation of fighter aircraft with its advanced capabilities and technologies. The Indian Air Force is trying to modernize its fleet with its plans to launch more advanced aircraft in the coming years.
What will happen to MIG-21 fighter pilots?
MIG-21 PENSION PERSONAL PILOTS WILL BE HERTY ROLES. Although the pilots typically do not select their flow, the retirement of MIG-21 provides the opportunity to switch to other aircraft or roles. They can play other warrior jets or play logistics, management or test pilot roles. The experiences and skills obtained from flying MİG-21 will undoubtedly serve them well in their future efforts.
