Wimbledon 2026 results: Cameron Norrie among six Britons to lose on first day

Norrie had played just one match on grass before this year’s Wimbledon, after retiring in the first round of the French Open with a rib injury.

And the former world number eight looked rusty as he broke 144th-ranked Zheng just once all match.

Zheng hit 21 aces to Norrie’s four, while the 22-year-old made just four double faults to Norrie’s 10.

Harriet Dart came close to completing a hard-fought comeback win but ultimately lost to former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 3-6 6-4.

The duo was planned to play on Court 17 on Monday, but with Raducanu’s withdrawal, their match was moved to Court 1.

Wildcard Darts ensured fans with tickets to the show venue were not disappointed as he forced the deciding set against the world number 31 in an entertaining two-and-a-half hour show.

Ostapenko will face either Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic or her compatriot Darja Semenistaja, the lucky loser who replaced Raducanu in the draw.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old British wildcard Mika Stojsavljevic lost to 2021 Olympic champion and 11th seed Belinda Bencic 6-2 6-1.

Felix Gill and Max Basing lost to 23rd seed Rafael Jodar and qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki, respectively, in their first matches of the Grand Slam main draw.

Alicia Dudeney, who also made a big move in the main draw, lost to American Alycia Parks 6-3 6-3.

This means the opening day household is counting on young Hannah Klugman, Mimi Xu, Francesca Jones, Oliver Tarvet and Jack Pinnington Jones.

There are 19 home players in the two singles draws; but 17 of them are playing against opponents ranked in the world’s top 55.
