With no arsenal limits in place, here are the countries that hold highest number of nuclear weapons

New Delhi: For the first time in decades, the world’s most powerful nuclear countries are operating without any official limits on the number of warheads they can deploy. Let us know, without any binding restrictions, which countries have nuclear weapons and how many they have.

Current estimates indicate that nuclear firepower is concentrated in the hands of a small group of states. There are approximately 12,000 to 12,300 nuclear warheads in the world, according to widely cited assessments by the Federation of American Scientists. There are approximately 10,636 in the United States and Russia alone.

Russia is believed to have the world’s largest nuclear arsenal, with nearly 5,800 warheads. This number includes deployed weapons, reserves and weapons waiting to be dismantled.

The United States follows with an estimated 5,200 to 5,400 warheads spread across land-based missiles, strategic bombers and submarine platforms. Together, these two countries control almost 90 percent of all nuclear weapons on the planet.

China has the third largest arsenal. Its stockpile has expanded in recent years and is now estimated to number around 600 nuclear warheads. Beijing’s nuclear modernization includes new missile silos and long-range delivery systems.

France maintains its independent deterrent with approximately 290 nuclear weapons. Most are deployed at sea and in air-launched systems. The UK has around 225 nuclear weapons, most of which are deployed on submarines for sustained deterrence purposes.

In South Asia, India and Pakistan continue to have similar nuclear capabilities. New Delhi is estimated to have approximately 170 to 180 warheads supported by land, air and sea delivery platforms. Pakistan’s stockpile is assessed at approximately 165 to 170 weapons, focusing on battlefield and short-range deterrent systems.

Israel has never officially confirmed its nuclear capability, but longstanding international assessments indicate its arsenal has around 90 warheads. Its program is one of the world’s most guarded strategic secrets.

North Korea completes the list of countries with nuclear weapons. Although its arsenal is smaller, it has grown through weapons testing and missile development. Current estimates suggest Pyongyang has around 40 to 50 nuclear devices, with ongoing work on delivery systems capable of reaching distant targets.

The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, better known as New START, which limits the nuclear weapons of the United States and Russia, expired on February 5, 2026. But that didn’t change those numbers overnight. It changed the strategic environment they were in. Without official borders, future expansions, modernization efforts, and distribution changes now depend entirely on national decisions.

As global tensions ebb and flow across regions, the distribution of nuclear weapons and the lack of binding ceilings ensure that the world’s most destructive arsenals remain at the center of geopolitical power calculations.
