Wolves: Gary O’Neil pulls out of the running for shock Wolves return at Premier League club

Edwards’ position at Middlesbrough will present some hurdles given his current job; It is believed that Boro are entitled to a significant compensation fee.

Edwards is a former Wolves Under-23 coach who was also first-team coach, having had a two-game interim stint in charge in 2016 before stepping away from the role.

“Yesterday my daughter told me this [Sunday]”So that probably tells you where I stand on this issue,” he said.

“You know my connections with the club but all my focus is on the job here, which is a fantastic job, and I’m trying to turn things around from the weekend in the really big game against Leicester.

“It’s difficult for me to comment on matters of speculation, I’m focusing on the fact that we’ve done a good job so far, apart from Middlesbrough.”

Wolves have a history of appointing managers with close links to high-profile manager Jorge Mendes in Nuno Espirito Santo, Bruno Lage and Pereira.

As well as O’Neil, Wolves are understood to have held talks with at least one manager from Mendes’ stable.

O’Neil was sacked by Wolves in December 2024 after a disappointing start to the 2024–25 season, failing to win in his first 10 games.
