Woman, 19, dies after being attacked by dog at property in Essex | UK news

A 19-year-old woman died after being attacked by a dog in Essex.

Police arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of taking responsibility for a dog that went dangerously out of control and caused fatal injuries following Friday’s incident. He is currently in police custody.

Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper of Essex Police said: “I know this incident will come as a shock to the local community. My thoughts, and those of all of us at Essex Police, are with the loved ones of the woman who died yesterday.”

Essex police said they were called to an address in Dunmow on Friday evening where they found the 19-year-old woman seriously injured. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they believed he was attacked by a dog at a property in Long Hide, in the village of Leaden Roding. Police added that the dog was seized to secure the scene.

There were 31,920 dog attacks on people in England and Wales in 2024, according to figures obtained from BBC freedom of information requests to police forces; This figure increased by 2% compared to the previous year.

The force said officers would be in the area on Saturday and appealed to the community for more information.
