Trump Says America “Lost A Little Bit Of Its Sovereignty” After Mamdani’s NYC Win, Warns Of “Communist” Shift | World News

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the US had “lost some of its sovereignty” following Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani’s historic victory in the New York City mayoral race. Speaking at the American Business Forum in Miami, Trump described Mamdani as a “communist” and warned that his leadership could turn New York into “another Cuba or Venezuela” and push residents to move to Florida.

“On November 5, 2024, the American people took back our government and our sovereignty. But we lost a small part of that last night in New York, and we will fix it,” Trump said.

Mamdani, 34, made history with her victory at Gracie Mansion, campaigning on a platform to expand government-funded programs and increase taxes on the wealthy. Trump argued that Mamdani’s policies reflected the broader direction of the Democratic Party across the country.

He warned: “If you want to see what the Democrats in Congress want to do to America, look at the results of yesterday’s elections in New York, where their party appointed a communist as mayor of the nation’s largest city.”

Trump added: “As I have warned for years, our opponents are determined to turn America into a communist Cuba, a socialist Venezuela, and you see what’s happening to those places.” He warned that extreme Democratic policies could push New Yorkers toward Florida. “The Democrats are now so extreme that Miami will soon be a haven for those fleeing communism in New York. They are fleeing… Where do you live? In New York, but I’m trying to leave because I don’t want to live in a communist regime.”

Taking aim at the city’s former Democratic mayor, Bill De Blasio, Trump said, “When I left New York for the White House, it was fine, but there were telltale signs of trouble because we had a guy named De Blasio… He’s probably been called the worst mayor in history.”

Commenting on Mamdani’s victory speech, Trump called it a “very angry” speech and said the incoming mayor was off to a bad start. “Yeah, I thought that was a very angry conversation, he was definitely mad at me and I think he should have been very nice to me. You know, I’m the one who has to approve of a lot of the things that happen to him. So he got off to a bad start.”

Responding to Trump, Mamdani touched on the city and its policies, stating that New York will be ruled by immigrants and that a “political dynasty” will be overthrown. “After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave birth to him. And if there is one way to intimidate a despot, it is to eliminate the conditions that allow him to accumulate power,” he said.

“This is not only how we stop Trump, it’s how we stop the next one. So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn up the volume.”

Mamdani also vowed to take action against exploitative landlords and corruption, saying: “We will hold bad landlords accountable because the Donald Trumps in our city have grown so comfortable taking advantage of their tenants. We will end the culture of corruption that allows billionaires like Trump to evade taxes and benefit from tax breaks.”
