Real Madrid announce £51.8m transfer Chelsea Signed a 6-year contract with defender Marc Cucurella.
The 27-year-old is currently playing with Spain at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but a deal (worth £47.5 million with an additional £4.3 million) was signed on Sunday ahead of the official announcement on Monday.
Since president Florentino Perez was re-elected and appointed Jose Mourinho as manager, Real are also understood to be targeting Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries. French defender Ibrahima Konate will join the team after leaving Liverpool.
It is understood that Cucurella, who transferred from Brighton to Chelsea for £ 63 million in 2022, is willing to return to Spain by passing through the Barcelona academy. He was linked with Atletico Madrid and returned to Barcelona.
The Catalan also gave an interview during the March international break criticizing Chelsea’s hierarchy following the mid-season departure of Enzo Maresca.
He was part of a core group of Spanish speakers who were frustrated with the situation and struggled to perform under Maresca’s successor, Liam Rosenior.
Cucurella had three years left on his contract despite agreeing to improved terms without an extension last season, which likely played a part in Chelsea’s decision to accept the offer.
Rosenior was eventually sacked, with Chelsea finishing in 10th place and failing to qualify for Europe despite Calum McFarlane being appointed as interim manager.
Former Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has since been appointed as the club’s permanent manager for the 2026-27 season.
