2025 Atlantic hurricane season ends: The five things that set this season apart

The North Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. However, the majority of tropical storm and hurricane activity typically occurs during the peak period of August through October.
At the beginning of the year, forecasters predicted 2025 would be an “above average” season.
Overall, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that the season fell within their forecast ranges for named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes.
There have been 13 storms and five hurricanes this year; Four of these strengthened into major hurricanes.
How active a hurricane season is can also be assessed by looking at the Accumulated Hurricane Energy or ACE Index. This reflects the strength, or wind speed, of each storm and how long it will last. Total ACE for 2025 is 132.9, indicating an above-normal or very active season.
