Woman uses walking cane to save young boy from oncoming traffic

A woman in Melbourne’s southwest used her cane to avoid being hit by cars after stopping a young boy from crossing into oncoming traffic.

Rebecca Cooper was on her way to buy lottery tickets on Morris Road in Hoppers Crossing when a little boy came running around the corner.

Dashcam footage shows the boy running around a street corner into oncoming traffic.

“Why is there a little boy?” the driver asked.

“Wait, stop, stop, stop” was heard as Mrs. Cooper opened the car door.

Ms Coopers, who lives with multiple sclerosis (MS) and Crohn’s disease, was unable to escape the car because she was reliant on a cane.

Instead, he used his cane to stop the boy in his tracks before taking him into his arms.

“He was so fast, he was running like he was facing forward and he just took off,” he told 7News.

“I couldn’t run because I had a cane, so I got out (of the car) and that’s when I grabbed my cane and used it to pull the poor little boy in.”

He said he usually “hates” using his cane, but “it works.”

The little boy’s mother soon ran after the runaway boy and took her son to a safe place.

Ms Cooper said the incident happened so quickly that the mother did not have a chance to say thank you.

“He was pretty distraught,” Ms Cooper said.

“I think she was thinking, ‘I got my child back,’ because she really caught him.”
