Wong rules out Australian ground offensive; Iran set to appoint new leader; Israel warns it will take down any Khamenei successor
The religious body that will choose Iran’s next religious leader to replace the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reached a more or less majority consensus, Assembly of Experts member Ayatollah Mohammedmehdi Mirbaqeri said on Sunday.
Mehr news agency quoted him as saying “some hurdles” to the process still need to be resolved.
On Saturday, a senior cleric at the Assembly of Experts said its members would meet “within a day” to elect a leader.
According to Iranian media, two members of the delegation, Ayatollah Muhsin Heidari Alekasir and Ahmad Alamolhoda, said that the parliament had chosen a successor.
Alamolhoda said that the head of the parliament’s secretariat, Ayatollah Hashim Hosseini Bushehri, was responsible for announcing the parliament’s decision.
Iranian media said the group had a minor disagreement over whether they should meet in person to make their final decision or skip this formality.
In a video published by Nournews on Sunday, Heidari Alekasir said face-to-face meetings were not possible under current conditions and suggested remote and written alternatives.
“This is an extraordinary situation, the assembly cannot meet in a plenary,” he said, adding that targeting the assembly would only benefit Iran’s enemies and “harm the revolution”.
