‘Won’t Use Force’: Trump’s Breather For NATO Allies On Greenland But Stays Firm On Takeover | World News

Greenland also continues to be the toast of the town in Davos. As NATO leaders voiced their concerns, US President Donald Trump gave them some breathing room, saying America would not use force to capture the island but wanted serious negotiations to take it. Trump, in his speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos on Wednesday, pressed for the control of the Arctic island by the United States.
“Unless I decide to use excessive force and force, frankly, we’re going to be unstoppable, we probably won’t get anything,” Trump said. “But I’m not going to do that. OK. Now everyone says, oh, good,” he said.
Trump said his remarks were aimed at dispelling speculation about the possible use of military force. “That was probably the biggest statement I ever made because people thought I was going to use force. I don’t need to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force,” he said.

Reiterating his demand for control of Greenland, Trump said, “The only thing the USA wants is a place called Greenland.” He then underlined that instead of an expanded agreement, he envisioned the US fully owning Greenland. “All we want is to get Greenland, including proper title and ownership, because you need ownership to defend it,” Trump said. “You can’t defend it with a lease.”
Calling for talks with European allies, Trump called for “immediate negotiations” over the potential US acquisition of Greenland, an autonomous region of NATO member Denmark. Revealing what he described as the strategic situation of the movement, Trump said, “It is only the United States that can protect, develop, develop this giant landmass, this giant piece of ice, and do it in a way that is good for Europe, safe for Europe, and good for us.” he said.
“That is why I call for urgent negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States, as many European countries have done throughout our history,” he added. Trump also argued that US control of Greenland would strengthen the NATO alliance.
“This will not be a threat to NATO. This will greatly increase the security of the entire alliance, that is, the NATO alliance.” he said, adding that he believed the United States was “treated very unfairly by NATO.” Reiterating his demand for control of Greenland, Trump said, “No nation or group of nations other than the United States is in a position to secure Greenland.”
“Every NATO ally has an obligation to defend its own territory,” he said. “We are a great power, much greater than people can understand.” Trump also criticized Denmark over Greenland, calling it “ungrateful” and connecting his remarks to World War II-era events.
Referring to the US role in defending the region, Trump said, “Denmark fell to Germany after only six hours of conflict and was unable to defend either itself or Greenland. So the US had to, and we did it.” Upset by the US decision at the time to allow Denmark to retain Greenland as territory, Trump said: “How stupid were we to do that?” he said. (with ANI entries)
