Ashes 2025-26: Joe Root scores first Test century in Australia during second Test

Joe Root ended his long wait for a Test century in Australia by hitting three figures on day one of the second Ashes Test in Brisbane.

After all the pre-series talk, in his 30th innings, Root started digging in as he often does to keep England afloat in the day-night Test.

The 34-year-old came into the game in a 5-2 stunner in the third over, falling for two and seeing wickets tumble at the other end, but reached the 40th century of his illustrious Test career late in the evening session with a score of 256-7.

He reached the milestone with a kick to his fine leg, removed his helmet and saluted the crowd in a typically restrained celebration.

“Joe Root has done it,” said BBC commentator and former England bowler Jonathan Agnew.

“The Australian media largely ignored it, but it was that kind of journey.

“He fought hard for this. This will silence some critics.”
