World Athletics Indoor Championships 2026: Jeremiah Azu narrowly misses out on 60m medal

Defending champion Jeremiah Azu narrowly missed out on a medal in the men’s 60 meter final at the World Athletics Indoor Championships held in Poland.

Twelve months after Azu claimed the first global title of her career by winning the world indoor gold medal in China, she missed a return to the podium by just 0.01 seconds with a time of 6.46 in Torun.

American Jordan Anthony, who reached the championship as the fastest man this year, reached 6.41 and led Jamaica’s Olympic and world 100-meter silver medalist Kishane Thompson to cross the line.

Thompson and American Trayvon Bromell rounded out the podium in 6.45, with Azu denied in a thrilling conclusion to the opening day of action.

Earlier Friday, Olympic champion and indoor world record holder Keely Hodgkinson controlled the women’s 800-meter heat from start to finish, winning in 2:00.32 and advancing to the semi-finals, where she will be joined by teammate Isabelle Boffey.

World bronze medalist Ben Pattison (1:47.48) came first in the men’s competition, also held on Saturday morning.
