World Cup 2026: England head coach Thomas Tuchel on Mexico match

Thomas Tuchel has dismissed concerns over England’s treatment in Mexico as they prepare to face the World Cup hosts; he said it was “nicer than I expected” and that the home fans were “friendly and respectful”.

Tuchel’s side will face Mexico in their last 16 match, starting at 18:00 local time on Sunday (1:00 BST on Monday, live on BBC One, iPlayer and Radio 5 Live).

On Saturday, the team was greeted with mixed cheers and jeers from fans as they left their hotel to train under increased security in Mexico City.

Ecuador, which lost 2-0 to Mexico in the last 32 of the World Cup, filed a noise complaint with FIFA last week after its fans disturbed their sleep with loudspeakers, motorcycles and horns.

As a result, Mexican National Guards lined up at the entrance to the hotel in England, while police officers in riot gear stood by barriers on the road outside.

“We had no problems tonight and I think FIFA is dealing with the situation,” head coach Tuchel said. “There is security around the hotel, so we expect a good night’s sleep.

“I don’t want to talk about problems that don’t exist yet. If they come, we will accept them. The best approach is to be relaxed and calm.

“Our start time is at six, so if we miss a few hours of sleep we’ll have time to cover other hours later in the morning.

“What I’ve experienced so far has been very respectful, emotional and very supportive of our teams, so we’re very respectful of everyone as well. We expect to be treated with respect and that’s been the case.

“It was better than I expected.”

Tuchel said he felt the energy in Mexico City.

“As soon as you get down here and see the excitement and the emotions, it grabs you right away,” he said.

“This is going to be a true World Cup match. We’re in an iconic place, an iconic stadium and a massive knockout game.

“It’s a big stage and we feel it. It makes you sharper and brings out your best performance. It makes you feel alive.”
