World Cup 2026: Mexico rampant at Azteca – could England be next in last 16?

“We have a chance to achieve the impossible.”

After Mexico edged Ecuador to reach the last 16 of the World Cup, some celebrating fans already had their eyes set on their next potential opponent.

England will face a tough test in their last-32 game against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday, but it won’t get any easier if they overcome this.

Because the next match will be against Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium; A mouth-watering match for many football fans, but a daunting one for England fans.

Mexico have never progressed beyond the quarter-finals at the World Cup, but their impressive showing in this tournament (four matches, four wins, eight goals scored and no clean sheets) has fans dreaming of what could have been.

“England’s Ballon d’Or favorite Harry Kane is leading this team,” said one fan.

“You have players like Jude Bellingham and it’s scary, but with the momentum we have, we have a chance to do the impossible.”

Judging by their performances at the World Cup and their record at the Azteca, Mexico going far shouldn’t seem like an impossible goal.

Their competitive record at this stadium was 69 wins, 17 draws and only two defeats in 88 matches. They are also unbeaten in 10 World Cup matches here.

Admittedly, the opposition they face at the Azteca may not always be of the highest quality, but it will still be a daunting task for anyone who faces them in the last 16.

“The whole country is behind them; we’ve seen the scenes,” former Australia and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said on ITV.

“If England go to Mexico it will be like stepping into a different World Cup for them.”
