At least two people died during celebrations in Mexico City on Wednesday as the country’s national team advanced to the last 16 of the World Cup, according to the local government. A 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from drowning, according to the city’s health secretary.
The incident occurred at Paseo de la Reforma and Lancaster in the Colonia Juárez neighborhood, when people were allegedly crushed by a public restroom trailer. The Health Secretariat reported: “There was a report of two unconscious persons on the streets of Hamburg and Lancaster, whereupon emergency response teams consisting of paramedics, firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, Government Secretariat officials and protective police officers went to the scene to provide assistance; after administering first aid and CPR techniques to the patients, they were transported to a hospital for specialized medical care.”
Rescue and Emergency Medical Squadron (ERUM), Firefighters, Red Cross personnel and Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection Secretariat personnel arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported.
While local media reported that a third person had died, there was no confirmation from the authorities.
Mexico ended a 40-year wait for World Cup qualifying round glory with an impressive and stylish performance to beat Ecuador 2-0 at the famous Azteca Stadium on Tuesday.
Their last win in such a match came in 1986, when they hosted the competition. As the final whistle blew, celebrations spread across the country.
With this win, Mexico have completed 10 consecutive World Cup matches unbeaten at the Azteca and will be confident heading into the round of 16, where they could face either England or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
More than a million fans gathered at the usual celebration spots around the capital, including areas such as Paseo de la Reforma, the Historic Center and the Angel of Independence, immediately after the national team’s match against Ecuador at the Mexico City Stadium.
