It’s easy for professional wrestling fans to criticize when things don’t go their way or when the story’s climax fails to live up to high expectations. Naysayers log in consistently, and when these things happen the criticisms often get louder and more exaggerated.
It’s safe to say that Saturday night’s conclusion to the story between El Grande Americano and Original El Grande Americano at AAA Lucha Libre Worldwide’s Noche de Los Grandes exceeded expectations and fermented itself as one of the best wrestling matches of the year.
The excitement was palpable. El Grande Americano has appeared on WWE and AAA programs and has become a fan favorite in Mexico. Professional wrestling fans across the country sang to him and welcomed him into the Lucha Libre culture. The original El Grande Americano was the hated villain whose fans booed loudly, twirled their middle fingers, and pushed back any momentum he would have gained.

It all culminated in a spectacular Mask vs. Mask match in front of a packed arena in Monterey. In the end, El Grande Americano defeated the Original El Grande Americano in a bloody contest. The original El Grande Americano was forced to remove his mask, revealing himself to be WWE star Chad Gable.
It was a long affair with Gable attacking El Grande Americano with a guitar kick to start the match, Rayo and Bravo taking out the Creed Brothers, and El Grande Americano pinning Gable through a table.
Both men exchanged punches, trying to remove each other’s masks before the match ended. They ended up bloodied, battered and beaten.

Professional wrestling fans universally agreed that this was one of the best matches of the year.
“I wore this mask so I could go on a quest to learn the art of Lucha Libre so I could beat all the Luchadores in the world that I hate, hate, hate,” Gable said after the match. “During this process of my journey, I learned everything there is to know about Lucha Libre, Mexico, AAA, Mexican people and Mexican culture.

“I am man enough to admit, I stand here before you as a man, not as a mask. And it makes me very sad, it hurts so much to say this, but I say with all the honor in the world that I could not overcome the Mexican spirit tonight.”

Gable later wrote on Instagram that he was going to Italy. It’s unclear what it will do next, but WWE will hold Clash in Italy on Sunday in Turin.
