The new movie, Dr. It follows the ending of No Way Home, in which a spell cast by Strange causes everyone in the world to forget the existence of Spider-Man’s secret identity, Peter Parker.
Brand New Day picks up four years later, after Parker has largely abandoned his connection to the world around him and devoted himself entirely to crime-fighting as Spider-Man, even as his ex-girlfriend MJ (Holland’s real-life wife Zendaya stunned in a black spider-themed dress at the film’s premiere in Los Angeles on Monday) forgets they’re a couple and turns to a new romance.
Amidst the turmoil in his life, Parker’s superpowers begin to undergo a sometimes disturbing evolution; many critics compare it approvingly to the direction taken by the popular original trilogy, starring Tobey Maguire as the web-slinger.
Critics called the film one of the best of the iconic web-slinger films and a return to form for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Critics praised Brand New Day’s returning star, Tom, and largely applauded the film’s move away from the confusing bloat of the franchise’s previous film, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post wrote that the current Spider-Man series is the one installment in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe that he’s still looking forward to.
Oleksinski described Brand New Day as a “welcome reunion” with Holland and Peter Parker, but noted that it was “much darker” than previous Spider-Man entries.
He agreed with the comparisons to the Maguire years, writing: “Tonally, Brand New Day is more like Tobey Maguire’s aughts films; in my opinion, they are the gold standard of not only Spider-Man films, but also Marvel films.”
Writing for RogerEbert.com, Brian Tallerico gave Brand New Day an average of 2.5 out of four stars.
The new movie hit theaters on Wednesday, and fan reviews are already very positive.
Like others, he saw the negative impact of the MCU and worried that the film was merely a crossover film for a bigger payoff.
Tallerico wrote: ‘The affection for the characters that have been around for four movies now goes a long way to holding Brand New Day together, but it ultimately succumbs to one of the MCU’s biggest problems in its final stretch: the feeling that this is just set-up for more movies.’
The premiere comes at a time when Tom and Zendaya’s latest film, The Odyssey, is already breaking critical and audience review records.
Figures from less than a week before The Odyssey opens in theaters on July 17 show the film’s total worldwide gross is $303 million, with another $15-20 million likely to come when Wednesday’s numbers come in.
But with the pair’s Spider-Man movie set to be released in the coming days, fans will have to see which movie will be the highest-grossing movie of the year, as Brand New Day is currently breaking ticket pre-sale records for its opening weekend and first week.
It comes after Supergirl was predicted last month to face a staggering $100 million loss after bombing at the box office on its opening weekend.
The film, starring 26-year-old Milly Alcock as a superhero, was released all over the world in June.
This was a big deal for Warner Bros., as Supergirl cost $170 million to produce and $120 million to release. and it was a major setback for the rebooted DC Universe.
Warner Bros. It got off to a hopeful start last summer when Superman became the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year.
However, weak ticket sales during its opening weekend caused Supergirl to gross $38 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters and $30 million in overseas markets.
