Zoho vs Y Combinator: Sridhar Vembu hits back at Garry Tan over AI ‘vibe coding’; here is what sparked the spat

Zoho Corporation co-founder and Chief Scientist Sridhar Vembu, in a recent post on social media, challenged Y Combinator President and CEO Garry Tan, claiming that the Indian technology firm will eclipse and outlast “vibe coding” companies.

In a post on the

Vembu pushed back on the argument, stating that Zoho had witnessed rapid customer growth levels of more than 50%, and questioned Tan how this was possible if the company faced a threat from vibration coding companies.

“If our business is going to be the first to compete with vibrate-coded apps, why are we seeing such rapid (in excess of 50%) customer growth right now? And why aren’t we seeing vibrate-coded email or spreadsheets or accounting apps or messaging apps yet? (sic),” Vembu said in its response.

Vembu’s claim against Tan

Garry Tan, CEO of California-based startup Y Combinator, questioned why customers should pay people $30 a month for a SaaS service; It is claimed that this can be solved with a special vibration code solution over the course of a weekend.

“Why pay $30 per seat per month for over-bundled SaaS when soon even non-tech operations will be able to jibe a custom solution in a weekend?” Tan said in his post:

After giving his view on Zoho’s progress, Sridhar Vembu took a bet against Tan that the tech giant is poised to eclipse and outlast jitter coding companies amid the general industry debate on the subject.

“Let me make a bet with Garry Tan: We will eclipse and outlast his vibration coding companies!” Sridhar Vembu said in his post.

Although Y Combinator is not a dither coding company, the startup invests in companies that use dither coding methods to improve software development techniques.

Is vibe coding a tech debt trap?

Vibe coding is a software development practice that allows individuals to create entire websites, apps, and more with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) software that automatically generates code rather than typing it line by line.

Vembu also emphasized that if companies don’t offer security, privacy and compliance guarantees to their customers, turning to jitter coding is a way to accumulate tech debt faster.

In his response to Tan’s post, Vembu said, “Without these guarantees, jitter coding accumulates tech debt faster and faster until everything collapses. Of course, tech debt for people like Garry Tan should be held hostage to unsuspecting buyers.”

He emphasized that Zoho’s plan going forward is to deliver a significant leap in programmer productivity while providing security, privacy and compliance guarantees to the company’s customers.
