Born on October 18, 1991 in Kampala, Uganda, Zohran Mamdani is the son of Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani and famous Indian filmmaker Mira Nair.

The New York City Mayoral race has attracted national and global attention, including from US President Donald Trump.
On the eve of the vote, Trump denounced Mamdani on Truth Social as the “Communist candidate” and warned that federal funding for New York City could be reduced if she is elected. “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the New York City Mayoral Election, it is unlikely that I will contribute Federal Funds beyond the required minimum,” Trump wrote.

Zohran Mamdani married Syrian American artist Rama Duwaji (28) in 2025 in a private ceremony celebrating the couple’s different cultural backgrounds.
