New York City’s elected socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, was officially sworn in as mayor in a midnight ceremony hosted by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

The event, which took place early Thursday morning, was a private ceremony in which Mamdani was accompanied by family members at the Old City Hall Station, a decommissioned subway station with deep historical roots.

In a press release, the Mamdani transition team said the midnight swearing-in was chosen in a location that symbolizes how the subway system is “the lifeblood of New York” and “a reminder of the city Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani fought for: a city built by and for New Yorkers.”

“When Old City Hall Station, one of New York’s 28 original subway stations, first opened in 1904, it was a physical monument to a city that dared to be both beautiful and to build great things that would change the lives of working people. This ambition need not be merely a memory of our past, nor confined only to the tunnels beneath City Hall: It will be the goal of the administration lucky enough to serve New Yorkers from the building above,” Mamdani said in the press release. he said.

According to his campaign, Mamdani used the Quran during his inauguration, making him the first Muslim mayor of New York and the first person to swear to use the Quran.

On Thursday afternoon, Mamdani will be publicly sworn in by Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders after the Democrat, another progressive ally, delivers the opening speech at the 1 p.m. inauguration. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
